Linda Weaver

Linda Briley Weaver of Henderson recently presented a contribution to the Vance-Granville Community College Endowment Fund that will create a new scholarship in memory of her late husband of 27 years. John Weaver was an educator in the Vance County Schools for 18 years and taught remedial reading for the Job Training Partnership Act (JTPA) program (the predecessor of VGCC’s Workforce Investment Act program) at Northern Vance High School.

In awarding the John Weaver Presidential Scholar Award, preference will be given to VGCC students majoring in programs related to education or working with children. “Education was so important to John,” Linda Weaver said. “This is an excellent way to remember him.” Weaver said that her husband was also a U.S. Army veteran, a member of the Kiwanis Club and member of First Baptist Church in Henderson. He died in 2002. Linda Weaver is the daughter of Nell and Jim Briley, also of Henderson. Her father was well-known locally as the owner of the Chevrolet dealership on Garnett Street in downtown Henderson.

The John Weaver Presidential Scholar Award will join more than 300 endowed scholarships for full-time students at the college. VGCC has awarded more than 6,000 scholarships since 1982, and the Endowment Fund awards more endowed scholarships than any other program of its kind in North Carolina. Tax-deductible donations to the VGCC Endowment Fund have often been used to honor or remember a person, group, business or industry with a lasting gift to education.
